Having worked in project management for almost 20 years, I've had the opportunity to work with many different project managers all around the globe. Over time, it has become clear that there are definitely some character traits and qualities that are common among successful project managers.

First and foremost, and probably not surprising: excellent communication skills. Successful PMs know how to communicate, when to communicate, how to communicate, and why they are communicating. They provide the right level and detail of information in a timely manner to an appropriate audience. I have seen PMs crash and burn when they withhold critical information or damage their credibility by sending out so much information and detail that their team members and stakeholders start to tune them out.

Check out this survey.

This is a great survey for a couple of reasons.
1. Who doesn't want to work in a role that potentially pays six figures!

2. It's awesome to see CAPM up there as the number two certification.

I've really seen some exciting growth in the recognition of and demand for people with CAPM certification. A few years ago a lot of great PMs were caught in sticky situation where they didn't have enough experience for a PMP yet couldn't get a job to get more experience without the PMP. The CAPM really offered these folks a great option - and it's so nice to see so many industries recognizing the CAPM certification as one of value.

So if you don't quite have the hours for PMP, please consider going for the CAPM!

The clock is ticking and PMI will soon switch over to a new exam based on PMBOK 4th Edition. Remember that June 30th is the last day for the PMP exam based on 3rd Edition and July 31st is the last day for the CAPM exam.

A lot of the Prometric testing sites are seeing a rush of people trying to sit for the exam prior to the change.

But what if you don't pass the exam before the deadline and have to re-site for the exam after the change? Is there a grandfather clause?

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

The 6/30 and 7/31 cut-over dates are firm. Even if you applied and already sat for a 3rd Edition exam, after those dates, you will be given a 4th Edition exam.

A couple of suggestions -

you can either try to get in now and get it done and hope you don't need to do a retake

or

you can take a chance on sitting for 4th Edition with 3rd Edition knowledge (not recommended!)

A common question that I get is regarding the scoring of the PMP exam.

Instead of getting a percentage correct in each domain, you will instead be graded: below proficient, moderately proficient, or proficient. These proficiency levels will be assigned in all six domains: initiating the project, planning the project, executing the project, monitoring and controlling the project, closing the project, and professional and social responsibility.

So you may be asking, "what do those proficiency levels mean?" Well that is a great question!

Below proficiency indicates that you need additional learning and application in this area. This is a great source from which to develop your continuing education (PDU) plan!

Moderate proficiency indicates that you have the "average" level of knowledge for practitioners in this area. I equate that to a "C".
