Best Method for PMP Preparation

When deciding to pursue the PMP credential, many folks are not sure what the best method is to fully prepare themselves for the exam. Depending on your research, you will find that people have some very set opinions about PMP preparation. Bottom line, there is no ONE answer to which is best because it really depends on the individual: your learning style, finances, availability, urgency, etc.

If you are trying to decide what is best for you, here are some different approaches and the pros and cons. Again, at the end of the day, one is not better than the other, it's about what is going to work for YOU.

SELF-STUDY
Using various resources available, prepare yourself for the exam through a self-structured program. Our recommended resources: The PMBOK Guide, 4th Edition, a reputable self-study book, and practice exams (be sure to verify the quality of the self-study book and the exams - there are a lot of poor quality products out there, especially on the internet).

Pros
• Schedule flexibility
• Low-cost (always good, right?)
• Preparation is done on your terms

Cons
• Material can be complex and thus self-interpretation may be difficult
• Potentially longer timeline for full preparation
• Buying too many resources can increase your cost and may potentially reveal conflicting information across the sources

Recommended for individuals with strong self-discipline, ability to quickly synthesize a large volume of information accurately, have the time to invest in self-study program, and who understand the "PMI perspective".

STUDY GROUPS
Meeting with other individuals who are pursuing certification, in a structured or non-structured format.

Pros
• Low-cost (again, we like this!)
• Knowledge sharing. Not only can you learn from others and leverage their knowledge, the act of discussing a topic or helping others learn will increase your knowledge as well.
• Potential for schedule flexibility

Cons
• Potential for a group learning-curve unless it is facilitated by an actual PMP instructor. Keep in mind that just because someone was able to pass the exam, it does not mean that they can accurately teach the concepts to others.
• Potentially extended timeline to cover all the materials

Recommended for individuals that have a good network of individuals that are also seeking certification. Great option is to check with your local PMI Chapter. Also good for those people who aren't in a rush to get their credential. We strongly recommend partnering study groups with any of the other forms of preparation.

LOW COST/COMMUNITY CLASSES
Many of the PMI chapters offer low-cost classes - either as an evening, multiple weekend, or condensed 3-day class. The chapter charges a fee to cover the materials and the instructor.

Pros
• Cost effective - because it is from your local chapter, there is no travel expenses and they will try to keep the class in a competitive range - usually from $400 - $900 (may be more or less!)
• In many cases the chapters use a professional PMP instructor - just check prior to enrolling if they have hired a professional instructor or are they having a volunteer chapter member facilitate
• Great networking opportunity with other project professionals in your area

Cons
• Timeline - may either be condensed or spread out over multiple sessions which can make learning and retention a bit more challenging
• There is still a cost
• No guarantee for the investment

Recommended for individuals who do have some money to invest in preparation and that have a local chapter with a strong program.

PREP CAMP / BOOT CAMP
There are a number of companies that offer PMP Prep in a boot camp-style format. Essentially a boot camp is 4 – 5 days of facilitated instruction on the PMBOK Guide®, specifically designed to prepare the participant for the PMP (or CAPM) exam. The boot camp is generally held at a hotel or training center.

Pros
• Comprehensive instruction on content that will be on the exam
• Decreased preparation time – many companies state that the participants will be fully prepared to sit for the exam immediately after the class
• Class cost investment may be packaged with a “Pass Guarantee”. (WARNING: Always read the fine print on these guarantees!)
• Isolated and dedicated environment allows participants to focus strictly on learning the material

Cons
• Cost (camps can range from $1995 - $3995) - but keep in mind that high cost does not always equal high quality!
• Travel may be required
• Did we mention cost?

Recommended for individuals who either have funds available or are eligible for employer reimbursement. Verify that the class does come with a pass guarantee and be sure to understand the terms of the guarantee prior to enrolling. Appropriate for those who are under a schedule constraint to get the certification.

Is there any one method that is better than the others? No. Because it’s all about what is going to work best for the individual. The PMP exam is a hard test. If you are going to self-study, which is definitely the lowest cost option, consider in the cost of re-examination in the event that you do not pass the first or second time.

We find that the majority of our clients underestimate the amount of information that they will need to learn in order to be fully prepared. Keep in mind, the PMP exam is not technically a test of your strength as a project manager, but your knowledge of the PMBOK processes and the PMI perspective and your abilities to apply that knowledge to multiple scenarios.

If you have any questions on what option would be best for you, do not hesitate to drop us a line or give us a call. We would be more than happy to go through the options, recommend additional resources, etc.

Best of luck on your credential pursuit!
