PMBOK

About six months ago, we received word from one of our PMP prep students that he had a strange weather topic appear on his PMP exam, something like a "hurricane chart" or something. After a bit of investigating and confirmation with the student, in all probabilities, he had a question on a tornado diagram.

While not surprising to see this come up on the PMI Risk Management Professional (RMP) exam, it was a little surprising to see it come up on the PMP exam. Since that time, we've had a good majority of our PMP students mention getting a question on tornado diagrams.

So what exactly is a tornado diagram? And what does it have to do with risk?

PMI estimates that communication is 90% of a project manager's job. Perhaps that's why you can count on a large number of questions from the Project Communications Management knowledge area on the PMP and CAPM exams. Including a formula. (Woohoo - we at PPM like formulas on the exams - we like to think of them as "easy rights" because if you know the formula you will hopefully get the question right!).

The PMBOK Guide discusses the "communication channels" formula and based on feedback, there's a pretty good chance it may show up on your exam. So learn it, know it, love it:

n(n-1)/2
where n represents the number of stakeholders on your project (including you)

Did you know the PMP Exam was changing again next year? August 30th is the target date for the latest round of changes.

While the change that occurred last year was based on the updated PMBOK Guide, 4th Edition, the changes next summer are due to the project management role delineation study (RDS) that is conducted every five to seven years as part of PMI’s ISO 17024 requirements.

What does this mean for folks seeking PMP certification?
1. No changes to the education and experience requirements
2. Approximately 30% of the PMP® exam content will change
3. Certain areas of the examination will be tested differently. For example, Professional and Social Responsibility will now be tested in every domain (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing) versus having it tested as a stand-alone domain.

We are getting some pretty consistent feedback from our students that they are seeing some PMBOK Guide, 3rd Edition questions on the newly launched PMP Exam for the PMBOK Guide, 4th Edition. Needless to say, this can cause some anxiety in the exam prep process, especially for those folks that are studying only the 4th Edition.

In general, the questions seem to be around project selection methods and a few on Arrow Diagramming Method (ADM) / Activity-on-Arrow (AOA). As I've mentioned to the students, while this might cause some frustration to get these questions, given the relatively low number, it shouldn't cause you to fail the exam.

While I always coach to go for as many right answers as possible, the relative low occurrence of these questions would not necessitate additional study of the PMBOK 3rd Edition, in my opinion.

The clock is ticking and PMI will soon switch over to a new exam based on PMBOK 4th Edition. Remember that June 30th is the last day for the PMP exam based on 3rd Edition and July 31st is the last day for the CAPM exam.

A lot of the Prometric testing sites are seeing a rush of people trying to sit for the exam prior to the change.

But what if you don't pass the exam before the deadline and have to re-site for the exam after the change? Is there a grandfather clause?

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

The 6/30 and 7/31 cut-over dates are firm. Even if you applied and already sat for a 3rd Edition exam, after those dates, you will be given a 4th Edition exam.

A couple of suggestions -

you can either try to get in now and get it done and hope you don't need to do a retake

or

you can take a chance on sitting for 4th Edition with 3rd Edition knowledge (not recommended!)

or

Released on December 31, 2008, the new edition (the 4th) of the PMBOK has been updated and revised.

IMPORTANT: The PMP exam will change to the 4th Edition as of July 1, 2009. The CAPM exam follows shortly on August 1, 2009.

Passionate PM recommends that candidates for either exam do not use 3rd Edition materials as the sole source to study for the 4th Edition exam.

At first glance, it may not appear that the changes are significant. In fact, I've even seen the changes called "cosmetic". However, when it comes to the exams, the changes may be more than cosmetic in nature. Studying PMBOK 4th Edition is pretty much like reading the PMBOK for the first time!

The processes (now 42 of them) have had changes to their Inputs, Tools & Techniques, and Outputs (ITTOs).

Summary of Changes

The process names are now consistently in a verb-noun format (i.e. Define Activities)
