Passing the PMP Exam - Proficiency Levels

A common question that I get is regarding the scoring of the PMP exam.

Instead of getting a percentage correct in each domain, you will instead be graded: below proficient, moderately proficient, or proficient. These proficiency levels will be assigned in all six domains: initiating the project, planning the project, executing the project, monitoring and controlling the project, closing the project, and professional and social responsibility.

So you may be asking, "what do those proficiency levels mean?" Well that is a great question!

Below proficiency indicates that you need additional learning and application in this area. This is a great source from which to develop your continuing education (PDU) plan!

Moderate proficiency indicates that you have the "average" level of knowledge for practitioners in this area. I equate that to a "C".

Proficiency means you scored above average in that area. Way to go!

Because each of the six domains make up a different percentage of the exam, it is possible (and common) to be below proficient in more than one area. This could especially be true in the smaller percentage areas such as initiating, closing, and professional and social responsibility.

If you do not pass the exam on your first try, your score-sheet will provide a great resource to help you redirect your studies in preparation for your next attempt on the exam. Just keep in mind that the questions are randomly generated from a very large bank of questions and no two exams are the same. I have seen some folks dismayed when on their second try they score differently and although they may have passed, they went down in proficiency in a domain or two. It can happen!

So remember, there are not a minimum or maximum number of domains in which you need to demonstrate proficiency in order to pass the exam. Your pass/fail rate is determined based on your overall performance, not on how many questions you answered right or wrong in a particular domain.

GOOD LUCK!
